Points won by each set: [ 24-10, 40-32 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
29 % Berdych – 16 of 54
15 % Del Potro – 8 of 52
Quite shocking scoreline because the 20-year-old Del Potro [12] was in a terrific form having won 29 out of 30 matches! He began the final with some stomach problems and couldn’t serve with his normal speed. Anyway he was surprised that Berdych outplayed him from the baseline – “I was a little confused with his game,” said Del Potro. “After the first set, I started to play a little better but it was too late. I didn’t have a chance to do anything with his game.” There was even a moment when a total crushing seemed possible as Berdych led 3:1* (40/15) in the 2nd set. Del Potro came back, and had three break points when the Czech [27] was serving to win the title. “In today’s tennis everything is so close and tough,” said Berdych. “It’s all about having confidence on the court. If you win one or two matches everything can come together.”
Berdych’s route to his 3rd title:
2 Roko Karanusic 6-3, 6-4
3 Tommy Robredo 7-6(6), 6-2
Q Fernando Gonzalez 6-0, 6-4
S Andy Roddick 6-7(3), 7-5, 7-6(3)
W Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 6-4
