Points won by each set: | 25-24, 52-46 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
43 % Berrettini – 31 of 71
44 % Auger – 34 of 76
“On grass, the first tournament of the year [on this surface] beating these unbelievable guys… there were a lot of tough moments,” said Berrettini [30], who went through the tournament unbroken (faced only two break points vs Struff) even though he had had very little experience on grass before. In the 2nd set against Auger [21] he saved five set points, all in the tie-break: four of them with big serves (at 4:6, 6:7, 8:9 & 10:11). Auger thought he won the set with a service winner at 6:5, but the Italian challenged it and the ball was minimally outside the service line (the Canadian made an error in a rally behind his 2nd serve). Berrettini hit a big return on his second match point, screamed like crazy doing that and perhaps it made an impact on Auger’s error. Before that final, the young Canadian hadn’t lost a set blowing a set point at the main-level.
Berrettini’s route to his 3rd title:
1 Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 6-4
2 Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-2
Q Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-3
S Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 7-5
W Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 7-6(11)
