The teenage Borg was a brutal force in men’s tennis, but at the time there were two older players he couldn’t comfortably play against: 4 years older Jimmy Connors & 6 years older Panatta. In 1976, Borg had 1-6 & 4-6 Head-to-Head records against them, respectively. When Borg turned 20, he found out how to beat them on a regular basis though. Despite the hostile crowd at Foro Italico, he defeated Panatta for the fourth time in a row. Serving at 1-all (15/40) in the 1st set, Borg [3] was bitten by a wasp close to the left eye, and virtually surrendered that set after medical treatment. In the 4th set the Italian [22] already led 5:1 (40/0), then Borg was two points away on serve to level at 5-all. The last game of the match was the longest, the 22-year-old Swede needed six deuces & two match points to break Panata for the tenth and last time.

Borg’s route to his 35th title:
1 Ricardo Ycaza 4-6, 6-0, 6-2
2 Eric Deblicker 5-7, 6-2, 6-0
3 Roscoe Tanner 6-2, 6-4
Q Harold Solomon 6-2, 6-1
S Eddie Dibbs 6-4, 6-3, 6-0
W Adriano Panatta 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3
