Points won by each set: [ 36-30, 30-23, 40-31 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
24 % Berasategui – 23 of 95
34 % Ivanisevic – 33 of 95
Clay wasn’t Ivanisevic’s favorite surface, but he was a favorite prior to that match as a two-time French Open quarter-finalist (1990 & 1992), who had easily beaten Berasategui in their only previous match, a year before in the same tournament (6-3 6-3 6-2). The Basque player was enjoying the best two weeks of his life with his super regular baseline game mainly based on aggressive forehands, and the impatient Croat considerably helped making errors off several Berasategui’s slow second serves. Berasategui was so confident that in the last game of the match he delivered his two fastest serves on the day, and they turned into aces – the second one on his first match point… It’s Berasategui’s only win over Ivanisevic in their five meetings.
