The 20-year-old Mancini [13] enjoyed the best period of his career then; after sensational triumphs in Monte Carlo & Rome, he was considered as one of favorites to the title…. The quarterfinal – in the opening sixty minutes – was played in a drizzle though, and the Argentinian couldn’t deal with Edberg’s heavy kick-serves & patient slices. As Edberg [3] led *4:3 in the 2nd set, the match was suspended for an hour due to heavier rain. After the resumption, in sunny conditions, it was very tight contest just like expected before they entered the court. Edberg saved a break point and broke Mancini on his sixth set point in the 9th game of the 2nd set (six deuces). In the 3rd set Mancini squandered two set points leading 5:3* as Edberg delivered two service winners, the first one off his second serve. Mancini couldn’t handle Edberg’s second serve also on the second match point for the Swede in the 7/5 tie-break.
