The first out of Lendl’s 25 official wins over McEnroe, in their third meeting. Despite the heavy conditions, the 22-year-old American [3] began the contest in great shape, serving two aces in the opening game, and holding four times easily. He led 4:3* (40/30) when he made a huge volley mistake and it turned the tables – Lendl [5] took 7 of the next 8 games. McEnroe led 3:2 in the 3rd set when the persistent rain was too heavy to continue.
