  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 38-39, 14-28, 42-36 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    31 % Tsonga – 30 of 96
    30 % Federer – 30 of 101

Exceptionally bizarre match and [1] Federer’s worst defeat in terms of the advantage he had built. Tsonga [7] saved a double mini-set point at 4-all in the opener and converted his third set point with a dive (Federer should have won that point… he’d finished with a BH volley an amazing net-rally before the change of ends raising his hands in joy). It caused the pain in his right elbow and with a grimace on his face he was on his way to lose another two sets quickly (took a medical time-out trailing *0:3 in the mid-set). After winning the 2nd set 6-1, Federer led 5:1* in the decider, so he had won 11 out of 13 games, held 13 times in a row without any troubles. How he could lose with such a lead against an opponent who was struggling with pain and not known as someone who comes back from big deficits? # Against all odds, also given Federer’s loss on the same court after almost identical scoreline two years before (you never step in the same river twice;) In four successive games the Swiss wasn’t closer to advance to the semis than two points (he missed a FH volley having an open court at 5:2, 30-all; the position was not comfortable, but certainly doable with his abilities). Tsonga improved from *1:5 to 6:5* (40/0) and when it seemed the match could have delivered another twist – Federer’s victory from a triple match point down – Tsonga decisively won his second tie-break obtaining the last four points (Federer’s double fault on match point).

    Serve & volley: Tsonga 3/5, Federer 6/9

    # Comparison of Federer’s two similar defeats in Montreal:
    2007 (F): Djokovic d. Federer 7-6(2), 2-6, 7-6(2)… 2 hour 13 minutes… Total points: 98-100… (Fed 1 & 4 points away)
    2009 (QF): Tsonga d. Federer 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-6(3)… 2 hours 19 minutes… Total points: 94-103… (Fed 3 & 2 points away)
