    Points won by each set: | 32-34, 46-41 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    33 % Melzer – 27 of 80
    43 % Raonic – 32 of 73

Melzer won five titles in his career, it’s the biggest one given its ATP 500 stats, and quite intriguing: the 30-year-old Austrian [38] was three points away from defeat in the first round, two points away in the second round (facing inferior players), then in the quarter-final & final he beat in straight sets the best servers at the time, experimenting with his pre-return position a lot – Melzer saved a set point in both those matches vs Isner & Raonic. The final he could have hypothetically lost in straight sets, because he trailed *4:5 (15/30) in the 1st set, and *1:4 in the 2nd. There was 4:5 (0/30) afterwards; a few points later, on the set point for Raonic [35], Melzer forced a backhand error.
The U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships belonged to the oldest tennis tournaments, having changed its location a few times. The tournament was in Memphis since 1977 and enjoyed a very prestigious status throughout the 80s & 90s. In the 21st Century the event was losing its prestige though, year by year the draw becoming weaker & weaker. Melzer’s victory marks Memphis as an ATP 500 event the next to last time, but the draw looked lousy that year – the same week two ATP 250 events (Marseille & Buenos Aires) had stronger fields.

Melzer’s route to his 4th title:
    1 Denis Istomin 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(4)
    2 Ivan Dodig 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5)
    Q John Isner 6-3, 7-6(6)
    S Radek Stepanek 6-4, 3-6, 6-2
    W Milos Raonic 7-5, 7-6(4)

Against Raonic, Melzer played his last ATP match. It was the first round of Vienna ’18, Melzer [426] stunned Raonic [22] in a match very similar to their Memphis final. The 37-year-old Austrian withdrew from his second round match against Anderson. In 2019, Melzer took part in two Challengers… After the Covid period (March-August 2020) when professional game wasn’t allowed for six months, he decided to continue his career in doubles alongside Roger-Vasselin. In 2021, at the age of 40, Melzer played just a few events in doubles, being unable to win a match.
