Due to Covid-19, the 2021 calendar has been modified. All players who wanted to participate in the Australian Open, were gathered in Melbourne earlier than usually, and after a quarantine they played three Melbourne events the same week (ATP Cup, Murray River Open & Great Ocean Road Open). “Murray River Open” won Dan Evans, claiming his maiden title, at “Great Ocean Road Open” the best was Sinner [36] who outlasted in the first all-Italian final since 1988, ten years older Travaglia [71], who played his first ATP final. The 19-year-old Italian finished the previous season with a title, and began another season with his second title: “Obviously, the confidence is there. [My] second ATP title, and this one is a bit different. [It was a] tough week for every player, playing twice in one day [on Friday]. Yesterday, I had a tough match against Karen [Khachanov], so today I’m very happy about my performance.” Sinner seemed very tired, I had impression an 80-90% mode was enough to outplay his less gifted compatriot.
…the following day Sinner lost a four-hour match to Shapovalov 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6 in the Australian Open first round.
Sinner’s route to his 2nd title:
2 Aleksandar Vukic 6-2, 6-4
3 Aljaz Bedene 7-6(6), 6-2
Q Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6(10), 6-4
S Karen Khachanov 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4) – 1 m.p.
W Stefano Travaglia 7-6(4), 6-4
Sinner led 5:0* in the tie-break vs Kecmanovic, then saved three set points (at one of them the Serb had a relatively easy position to pass) to convert his 9th set point!
