Points won directly behind the serve:
    34 % Federer – 30 of 86
    19 % Blake – 16 of 81

Just like three years before, Federer destroys his American opponent, dropping just 7 games in the Masters final. Sublime performance from the Swiss, especially his backhand was working amazingly well. Up to 6-0, 4:1* (15/0) he’d actually played an error-less match. Federer said: “I even had to laugh at one stage at how well I was playing. I always came up with a great answer. I was in control all the time and pretty much everything I wanted to do, I did.” It was their second ‘best of five’ final of 2006.

Federer’s route to his 45th title:
    rr. David Nalbandian 3-6, 6-1, 6-1
    rr. Andy Roddick 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-4 – 3 m.p.
    rr. Ivan Ljubicic 7-6(2), 6-4
    S Rafael Nadal 6-4, 7-5
    W James Blake 6-0, 6-3, 6-4

    # Comparison of their two 2006 finals:
    Indian Wells: Federer d. Blake 7-5, 6-3, 6-0… 1 hour 43 minutes… Total points: 102-66
    Shanghai: Federer d. Blake 6-0, 6-3, 6-4… 1 hour 37 minutes… Total points: 100-67
