    Only their third (and last) meeting. Sampras [3] began it leading 3:0* (30/15). Kuerten [2] broke back, but lost the tie-break 5/7 – thanks to that Sampras finished the season with a great 27-9 TB record (75%) including three tie-breaks won against Guga in their four mutual successive tie-break sets (their previous match SamPe won 6-1, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6). Despite the loss of the very long & tight set, the Brazilian raced to a 3:0* lead in the 2nd set and got a decisive break at 4-all in the 3rd set. Serving to advance to the final he trailed 15/40, but won four consecutive points.
