Points won by each set: | 18-28, 35-26, 12-1… |
Points won directly behind the serve:
36 % Nadal – 20 of 55
21 % Nishikori – 14 of 65
Nishikori was arguably playing his best tennis (led 6-2 4:2*) until the 7th game of the 2nd set. He didn’t move at all to Nadal’s forehand in the last point of that game & began the following game limping (back injury). The Japanese took a medical time-out after the game No. 9 & toilet break before the 3rd set in which he won just 1 point losing 12. During the change of ends decided to retire… Prior to the final Nishikori had won 14 matches in a row (his career-best streak). After the match he said: “There is a lot of confidence I get from this tournament by beating [Ferrer] in three sets and playing well in the final today. It’s going to be very exciting at [Roland Garros] because I’ve never feel like this on clay. I’m very confident of whatever I hit going for winners. I can hit from either side – forehand or backhand – so it’s a very good feeling that I have on clay right now.”
Nadal’s route to his 63th title:
2 Juan Monaco 6-1, 6-0
3 Jarkko Nieminen 6-1, 6-4
Q Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-2
S Roberto Bautista 6-4, 6-3
W Kei Nishikori 2-6, 6-4, 3-0 ret.
