Tiriac’s experiment… According to his will in 2012 the event was held on the blue clay courts! The biggest specialists of clay complained not only on the colour, they said that the courts were too fast and didn’t allow the natural clay-sliding. Perhaps they were right because neither of the four semifinalists (Federer, Tipsarevic, Del Potro, Berdych) could say about himself “I’m a clay-court lover”. Looking at the service numbers of the final I’d say they fit more to a hardcourt match… Berdych [7] played a terrific opener, but lost his serve in the 2nd game of the 2nd set, and actually it was a vital moment. Federer [3] in both sets he won, already led *5:3, but they had different progress. In the 2nd set the Swiss had a break point at 4:1 (Berdych’s ace), in the 3rd set the Czech was a better player until 3-all, putting pressure on the legend in his every service game. “It was a tough tournament and a brutal draw,” Federer said, “I’m sure we will see each other many more times and they will be quality matches like this one.”
Federer’s route to his 74th title:

Q David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4
S Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 6-3
W Tomas Berdych 3-6, 7-5, 7-5
