The stats without 4 games of the opener

Points won by each set: [ 33-26, 30-25 ]

When it seemed that the 31-year-old Mahut would become another good player with plenty of matches, who never won an ATP tournament, very unexpectedly as a player ranked No. 240 coming back from a left knee injury, he claimed his first title on his favorite surface. Possibly his positive H2H vs Wawrinka, helped him – they had faced each other twice many years before (Futures & Challenger) and the Frenchman won those matches easily against the teenage Wawrinka. Admittedly in 2013 Wawrinka [10] was before his Grand Slam titles, but already established as an elite player for a couple of years. “After all the difficulties these past few months this win proves that I was right to keep going,” Mahut said after the rain-interrupted final. In the opener he saved break points in two games, then from 3-all after two rain-breaks, he was fully controlling the outcome with his attacking game-style.

Mahut’s route to his maiden title (136th main-level event):
[ Meuffels 6-3, 6-2; Ouellette 6-3, 6-2; Kubot 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 ]
1 Ricardas Berankis 6-1, 6-4
2 Andrey Kuznetsov 6-2, 6-4
Q Evgeny Donskoy 6-3, 7-6(1)
S Xavier Malisse 6-3, 6-3
W Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4
