The first meeting between the 29-year-old descending Panatta [22] and ten years younger ascending Lendl [29]. One year later the Czechoslovak was already much higher in the ranking, but when they played on a gloomy day at Foro Italico (October 5th), the Italian took the early initiative withstanding a triple break point in the opening game. The weather was disastrous in the 2nd set, it helped Lendl to establish a 4:1* lead. After two-rain breaks, the officials decided to continue the rubber the following day – in sunny weather, Panatta played a concert, admittedly he lost two straight games after the resumption, then he won twelve in a row though, not being even a point from losing one of them! Two hours later Panatta came back on court to win doubles along with Bertolucci. On Sunday, Lendl lost the fourth (decisive) rubber 5-7 in the 5th set to Barazzutti, who had lost 5-7 in the 5th set on Friday (against Smid, leading 5:2).
