   Stark’s route to his maiden title:

   2 Andrey Chesnokov 6-2, 6-4
   Q Thomas Gollwitzer 7-6(1), 6-4
   S Olivier Delaitre 6-3, 6-0
   W Cedric Pioline 6-3, 6-2

   * Enqvist was a defending champion. Two weeks later, Stark [57] wins a strong Challenger in Brest (also carpet indoors) where en route to the title he defeats four “ATP players”. Pioline was ranked 12th, and it was the second of three consecutive weeks when he reached ATP finals indoors. In Bolzano he was the only seeded player in the quarterfinals.
