Very intriguing duel on green-clay between a fresh No. 1 Agassi, and Chang [6], who improved his serve and found new – more aggressive – gamestyle which put him in the mix of the best players in the world for the next two years. In the 2nd set Agassi squandered two set points on serve at 5:4, and another five set points leading 6:1* in the tie-break; at 6-all Chang made a backhand error trying to pass, and the older American converted his eighth set point with a devastating forehand winner. In the 3rd set Agassi led on serve 40/30 at 4-all when Chang got the next two points with backhand cross-court dropshots although he hadn’t used them before in the match! It’s quite interesting that in his last three service games, Chang applied first serves on ad-court close to the sideline and it was successful tactics.
# Curiosity: even though Agassi finished their H2H leading 15-7 (8:4 after Atlanta), he lost their first three tight ‘best of 3’ matches
Chang’s route to his 21st title:

2 Wade McGuire 6-1, 6-2
Q Jordi Arrese 7-5, 6-3
S Todd Martin 6-3, 6-0
W Andre Agassi 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4
