Indoor encounter on Rod Laver Arena. Woodbridge [33] was a favorite to win it because he had reached the Wimbledon semifinal a year before, had a supportive crowd behind and faced an opponent for whom the 4th round in a major was already the biggest result in career. Escude [88] managed to come back from a *2:5 deficit in the opening set, then saved break points in his first three service games of the 2nd set to break Woodbridge at 3:2; there was a reminiscence in the 3rd set – Woodbridge wasted break points in Escude’s first two service games, and it was too much for his nerves – he lost the last five games of the match…. Watching so many matches making stats I’ve noticed that it’s very tough to win three games in succession from a break point down, Escude was able to win them five!
