Points won by each set: | 35-33, 36-27, 28-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
23 % Muster – 20 of 85
31 % Ivanisevic – 30 of 94
Both left-handers were at the top of their games at the time, Ivanisevic [4] could be considered as a slight favourite because the roof was closed (rain)… They both were playing a high-class tennis more or less sixty minutes only; in the meantime the Croat fired 17 aces in just eight service games (!), he had a game point for 5-all in the opener and a few game points to level at 3-all in the following set – he lost the crucial 6th game of the 2nd set after six deuces though, and his focus disappeared then – he didn’t serve an ace in his five another service games, and Muster [5] advanced to his second Aussie Open semifinal after 1 hour 41 minutes (the first semifinal in Melbourne he reached eight years before)… Two months later they play an epic Davis Cup rubber in Graz (also indoors) which Ivanisevic unexpectedly wins 6-7, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 – Muster’s only Davis Cup loss on clay in his 30 matches on that surface. Austria survives that tie over Croatia 3:2 anyway.
