# Their back-to-back Aussie Open final, and another four-set win of the American, arguably easier than the previous one. For the second time in the Open Era two consecutive finals in Melbourne were played between the same players (previously it occurred in years 1981-82 as Johan Kriek defeated twice Steve Denton). After the first two sets it looked like potentially the shortest Aussie Open final, but Edberg got a second wind as the 3rd set began. Courier led *4:3 (30/0) in the 4th set, then held at ‘love’ trailing 4:5 to win the final three games, converting his third match point with a service winner. Edberg’s last major final, the four years younger Courier seemed like someone who would win 3-4 more major titles, he didn’t win another one though… A few months before Courier had won against Ivanisevic after identical scoreline.
Courier’s route to his 10th title:
1 Lars Jonsson 7-5, 6-0, 6-3
2 Robbie Weiss 6-2, 7-5, 6-4
3 Guillaume Raoux 6-4, 6-3, 6-4
4 Sergi Bruguera 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(5)
Q Petr Korda 6-1, 6-0, 6-4
S Michael Stich 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-2
W Stefan Edberg 6-2, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5
