Points won by each set: | 31-29, 28-14, 27-12 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
13 % Lendl – 9 of 68
35 % Noah – 26 of 73
Lendl and Noah manufactured an interesting 11-year-old rivalry. At the beginning of the year 1990, Noah stunned Lendl 6-1, 6-4 in the Sydney quarter-final. Unfortunately two weeks later, their last encounter on the same Rebound Ace surface disappointed (Lendl ultimately edged 11-7 their H2H)… Noah [13] thought that he won the opening game with an ace at 40/15, and unnecessarily argued too long with the umpire – afterwards committed a double fault, lost his serve, and Lendl [1] never looked back (won 16 points in a row in the 2nd set) snapping a 10-match winning streak of the Frenchman. That loss actually meant the end of Noah as a player belonging to the broad elite, a position he’d occupied throughout the 80s: after Melbourne he admittedly came back to the Top 10, but he finished the year ranked No. 40 (the lowest since 1979) which caused his decision to play an abbreviated farewell season in 1991 (that year he appeared only in seven tournaments).
