The 22-year-old Hurkacz [41] became the 14th first-time champion on the tour in the year 2019 and the first Polish player to win a tour-level tournament since 1982, when Wojtek Fibak won in Chicago (in the meantime two Poles, Lukasz Kubot & Jerzy Janowicz, played five ATP finals). Hurkacz got the deciding breaks at 2:1 in 1st and 3:2 in 3rd set. The decider was so long despite just 51 points played, because interrupted a couple of times by the rain – the break between the sets lasted 14 minutes, then occurred another two breaks (8 & 4 minutes), thus in fact the set lasted around 30 minutes instead of the official 55! Paire [30] began the decider with a break, but committed two straight double faults in the following game. In the semifinals Paire defeated Steve Johnson (he shares the same coach with Hurkacz, Craig Boynton) after one of the most unusual scorelines in tennis (1-6, 6-0, 6-0).

Hurkacz’s route to his maiden title (27th main-level event):
2 D.H.Lee 4-6, 6-0, 6-3
3 Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 3-1 ret.
Q Francis Tiafoe 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-1
S Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-4
W Benoit Paire 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
