Acuna became one of the most unexpected Wimbledon quarter-finalists in the Open Era. The 27-year-old titleless Chilean, ranked 133rd in the world, barely escaped from a defeat in the first round qualifying event (6-7 7-6 6-3 over Mike Baroch), then won another two q-matches & four in the main draw, eliminating i.a. in five sets the future champion Pat Cash, No. 7 at the time. The 33-year-old Connors was the end station, nevertheless Acuna attacking the net behind every serve, produced a competitive, very interesting 2nd set, in which he led *5:4 (30/15), had four break points at 5-all & saved three set points at *5:6 before losing the ensuing tie-break 3/7. Acuna finished his career with a 7-1 record in five-setters…
