The year 2002 turned out to be a breakthrough season for both 23-year-old shot-makers. Prior to 2002 neither of them had reached an ATP final; when they faced each other in Washington, Blake [32] was trying to win his maiden title in the third final attempt (defeats in Memphis & Newport) while for the man from Thailand [54] it was the second opportunity following his final in Chennai six months before. Srichaphan led 3:1* in the 2nd set tie-break, but lost four straight points; in the 3rd set he led 2:1* (40/15) – Blake withstood another adv-BP in that game, and leading 3:2 he held with the help of another break point saved. They will meet in the ATP finals two more times within three years (Long Island ’03 & Stockholm ’05)….

Blake’s route to his maiden title (35th main-level event):
2 Alex Ogorodov 6-4, 6-1
3 Guillermo Coria 6-4, 7-5
Q Alex Corretja 6-4, 6-4
S Andre Agassi 6-3, 6-4
W Paradorn Srichaphan 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4
