  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: [ 36-28, 35-22, 23-33, 29-26 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
    25 % Federer – 29 of 116
    22 % Novak – 26 of 116

The times when the young Federer [13] still aspired to be a serve-and-volley player, but in that match he was only 12/27 implementing that style (Novak 1/3). He broke at the end of sets 1 and 4 (in the 1st set he already had a set point at 5:2, later on Novak had a point to level at 5 games apiece). The Czech led *1:0 (40/15) in the 2nd set when unexpectedly lost six straight games. A dead net-cord helped Federer to convert the first match point. The first of their three finals within a year… In the Austrian capital, Federer regained his form after very disappointing Summer performances on grass and American hardcourts. Federer was struggling emotionally after death of his Australian coach Peter Carter (died on August 1st, 2002).

Federer’s route to his 4th title:
    1 Zeljko Krajan 7-5, 6-1
    2 Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4
    Q Bohdan Ulihrach 6-3, 6-3
    S Carlos Moya 6-2, 6-3
    W Jiri Novak 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4
