Points won by each set: | 26-16, 29-21, 30-17 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
33 % Becker – 21 of 63
30 % Noah – 23 of 76
Big disappointment in a night session match between two very entertaining players. The 22-year-old Becker enjoyed arguably the best form of his life in 1989 while his seven years older friend – looking retrospectively – had only a few months of competitive tennis ahead of himself. From 2-all in the opener, Becker won 12 points in a row and never looked back displaying superb game, especially on serve – he wasn’t taken to ‘deuce’ even once. Noah, who had survived two straight five-setters entering the court against Becker, lost the US Open quarterfinal for the third time in his career (1983, 1985)… Twelve months later they face each other on the same Stadium Court & Becker wins with similar ease 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(2).
