Points won by each set: | 29-17, 31-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
39 % Troicki – 18 of 46
11 % Kukushkin – 6 of 51
The first final in history between two qualifiers! Nevertheless, in 1990 Francisco Clavet (lucky loser) beat Eduardo Masso (qualifier) in the Hilversum final… Troicki’s [92] fifth ATP tournament after his comeback (suffered a one year ban due to refusing a blood test at Monte Carlo ’13). The Serbian dropped from No. 53 to 847 when he didn’t play… Kukushkin [66] took a medical time-out trailing 1:4 in the 2nd set. It’s interesting that the same day almost occurred a final between two other players who participated in qualifications – in Auckland triumphed Jiri Vesely, who in his last qualifying round had defeated Lucas Pouille – a man who lost in the semi-finals as a lucky loser to Adrian Mannarino – he was beaten by Vesely in the final 🙂
Troicki’s route to his 2nd title:
qualies: Lopez-Perez 6-3, 6-4; Jarry 4-6, 6-1, 6-4; Travaglia 7-5, 6-3
1 Martin Klizan 6-2, 6-3
2 Pablo Andujar 4-6, 6-3, 6-3
Q Simone Bolelli 6-3, 3-6, 7-5
S Gilles Muller 6-2, 6-4
W Mikhail Kukushkin 6-2, 6-3
Against Simone Bolelli, Troicki trailed *3:5, being two points away from defeat in the following game. “There are a lot of emotions actually,” said Troicki. “It’s been a tough road, a lot of work, and it paid off with a nice title. If I look back to where I was five, six months ago, it’s amazing to have a title already. So it’s a really nice moment for me and for all my team. It’s very emotional.“
