  1. Voo de Mar says:
26 out of 33 games are included to the stats (78%… aces, d.f. & break points valid overall)

The 2-hour 21-minute final between 21-year-old Gambill [45], for whom it was the first ATP final, and his three years younger opponent [91], who went through qualifying & the main draw not dropping a set. The match was suspended for 46 minutes at one set apiece due to rain. In the 3rd set Hewitt came back from a break down & had a mini-match point at 4:3 – Gambill’s forehand was called ‘out’ but Steve Ullrich changed the linesman’s decision to award the point for the American… “It feels great and even better because I knew I had to work for it,” Gambill said, “I sure belong out there. And this certainly helps.

Gambill’s route to his maiden title (his 32nd main-level event):
    1 Franco Squillari 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
    2 Pete Sampras 4-6, 6-3, 6-4
    Q Justin Gimelstob 4-6, 6-4, 6-1
    S Andre Agassi 5-4 ret.
    W Lleyton Hewitt 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4
