Points won by each set: | 38-31, 49-43 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
36 % Krajicek – 25 of 69
29 % Braasch – 27 of 92
I had not seen the match ‘live’, but when I saw it a few years ago I thought “I can’t evoke Krajicek [27] playing the backhand so well”. Taking into account the scorelines of his five Rosmalen matches against good-serving, attacking players, perhaps it might have been the best week in his career as far as backhands are concerned. It was his first title on grass, two years before his Wimbledon triumph (thanks to that he confirmed his versatility having won titles on hard, carpet and clay before). The 27-year-old Braasch [44], known for his unorthodox service motion & inclination to overusing trick-shots, played his only ATP final then. In the 2nd set at 2-all he was broken after an 8-deuce game, therefore the set lasted almost an hour.
Krajicek’s route to his 6th title:
1 Jens Renzenbrik 6-1, 6-4
2 Nicolas Pereira 6-3, 6-1
Q Alex Antonitsch 6-4, 6-2
S Henri Leconte 6-4, 6-4
W Karsten Braasch 6-3, 6-4
