   Fascinating match-up on paper between two 22-year-old players: more experienced, higher ranked Safin [2] and more adjusted to clay Ferrero [11]. Safin had easily won their two preceding ‘best of five’ meetings, but in that Parisian ’02 semifinal Ferrero was too consistent in defence, and accomplished something he’d failed to do in his two previous French Open semifinals as he lost them both to Gustavo Kuerten.
