  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 31-22, 34-23 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    46 % Becker – 25 of 54
    19 % Kriek – 11 of 56

First title of the 17-year-old Becker [29] – it was his 24th main-level tournament. He saved a break point in the opening game and dominated a very experienced grass-court player (Kriek won the Aussie Open twice on grass). The South African [16] was broken at 3:4 in the 2nd set after the longest game of the match (four deuces) which was followed by the shortest (Becker fired three service winners & an ace on the first match point). “I looked at my manager (Ion Tiriac) and he pointed to the balcony,” Becker said about his parents. “I looked into the crowd and he kept on pointing upwards until I saw them. I did not know they were coming over.” The beaten finalist was prophetic: “If he plays like that every day at Wimbledon, he can win the tournament. On top of his serve, he hits some incredible shots.”

Becker’s route to his maiden title:
    1 Todd Nelson 7-6(10), 7-5
    2 Dan Cassidy 6-4, 7-6
    3 David Pate 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3
    Q Pat Cash 6-4, 6-4
    S Paul McNamee 6-1, 6-4
    W Johan Kriek 6-2, 6-3
