  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: [ 31-27, 44-46, 30-22 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
    26 % Pavel – 28 of 105
    41 % Roddick – 39 of 95

Despite being lower ranked [43 vs 35] Roddick was a slight favorite because he had beaten Pavel in their only meeting (Miami ’01) and entered the quarter-final with two consecutive huge wins over former (Moya) & current (Kuerten) Nos. 1. But the 2-hour 6-minute match proved that it was still a time for the 19-year-old American to gain important experience which allowed the explosion of his potential in 2003. Pavel broke at 1-all in the 1st & 3:2 in the 3rd set. He had even an outlook to finish it up in straights, but Roddick withstood two mini-match points at 4-all in the 2nd set with his booming serves, and won the tie-break 7/2 thanks to aggressive attitude at the net.
