  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 38-29, 29-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    44 % Philippussis – 25 of 56
    25 % Chang – 15 of 60

Philippoussis [16] spoiled Chang’s 26th birthday capturing the St. Jude title with his sheer power (the Australian manufactured plenty of firm winners in the 1-hour 20-minute encounter). He had only one difficult service game – as he led 2:0 in the 1st set when he held after four deuces, saving four break points. It were the last days for the Chinese-American [5] with a Top 10 status (he’ll finish the 1998 season ranked No. 29). Chang, who was a defending champion in Memphis, lost to Philippoussis for the first time in their five meetings.

Philippoussis’ route to his 5th title:
    2 Wayne Black 6-1, 6-2
    3 Sjeng Schalken 6-4, 6-4
    Q Thomas Enqvist 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(3)
    S Marcelo Rios 6-4, 7-6(5)
    W Michael Chang 6-3, 6-2
