Points won by each set: [ 37-25, 38-31 ]
Points won directly on serve:
44 % Sampras – 25 of 56
32 % Martin – 24 of 75

Martin [22] had no chance in Sampras’ [1] eleven service games, never got even ‘deuce’. He was serving very well too, but not in his first three service games of the final as he faced break points in them all, and Sampras capitalized on his third opportunity which separated them in the end. In the 2nd set tie-break Martin helped a bit committing 2 of his 3 double faults, not risking the second serves. Sampras’ second title within two weeks following his success in San Jose – en route to both titles the best player of the 90s experienced the toughest matches against Greg Rusedski, who was a Top 50 player at the time (no. 4 one year later).

Sampras’ route to his 38th title:
2 Richey Reneberg 6-3, 7-6(3)
3 Greg Rusedski 7-6(7), 7-6(1)
Q Mark Woodforde 6-4, 7-6(7)
S Michael Chang 6-3, 6-2
W Todd Martin 6-4, 7-6(2)
