Fish [581] played his last professional match today at the US Open losing to Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 5-7, 3-6 (three hours eleven minutes), a player whom Fish has beaten more than anyone else in his long career. The American was serving to win the match at 5:4 in the 4th set, but lost his serve quickly at ‘love’. He also had four break points in two different games of the 5th set, but Lopez responded every time with blistering serves (22 aces in total) & took advantage of the cramping Fish, winning the last two games easily… The American was struggling with injuries in the last three years, he’d actually finished his competitive career withdrawing from a fourth round match at the US Open ’12 vs Federer. Since then, he played only ten events, all in the United States (6-10 record).

The American played five finals of big tournaments losing them all in deciding sets:
    Cincinnati 2003: Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-7(4)
    Olympics 2004: Nicolas Massu 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6
    Indian Wells 2008: Novak Djokovic 2-6, 7-5, 3-6
    Cincinnati 2010: Roger Federer 7-6(5), 6-7(1), 4-6
    Montreal 2011: Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-3, 4-6
