Points won by each set: [ 42-35, 37-36 ]
Points won directly on serve:
25 % Mancini – 20 of 78
36 % Hlasek – 26 of 72

Hlasek’s best chance to reach a big final… The Swiss [21] was a slight favorite as a player more adapted to faster surfaces, in a good form having reached the Indian Wells quarterfinal (defeated i.a. Sampras) two weeks earlier. Mancini [24] – known as a clay-courter – could consider already his advancement to the semifinals as something very satisfying. Their appearance at that stage quite unexpected, but especially Mancini’s one well deserved as he had defeated Becker & Krajicek in two preceding meetings… so he reached the final with three consecutive wins over serve-and-volleyers. Night session encounter; Hlasek was serving very well, but at 5-all in the 2nd set he began the game with two double faults, then at 30-all he left Mancini’s accidental backhand return lob, and the ball landed on the baseline.
