Prior to July 2013, the 26-year-old Fognini had played 150 main-level events winning none. Then he came to Germany to win back-to-back titles on clay (Stuttgart & Hamburg), and lost in the final of Umag the following week, which extended his match-winning streak to 13! In the 2-hour 26-minute Hamburg final, Fognini [25] trailed *1:4 in the 2nd set. In the tie-break the Argentine [114, qualifier], participating in his first ATP final, squandered three match points – 6:5 (failed a serve-and-volley action – his only attempt in the final), 7:6* (Fognini’s volley winner) & 8:7 (Delbonis missed an aggressive forehand). Their first official encounter, but when they met two years earlier in the Madrid qualies, the outcome was quite similar, reversal though – Delbonis prevailed 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 trailing 2:4* in the 2nd set.
