Federer’s win in that final wasn’t obvious before, even though he was ranked much higher than his German opponent [5 vs. 73]. Kiefer had led 3:1 in their H2H at the time, having won their previous meeting (4-6 6-4 6-4) on the same court in the semifinal of 2002. The final lasted 68 minutes, and the 22-year-old Swiss joined the elite company of players to win titles on every surface – grass, clay, hard & indoors.
