Points won by each set: | 33-21, 28-17 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
39 % Fucsovics – 16 of 41
10 % Gojowczyk – 6 of 58
The first Hungarian player to win a main-level title since Balazs Taroczy in Hilversum ’82. Fucsovics [60] had break points to lead 5:0 in the opener, in the 2nd set he won the last five games, converting his first match point with an ace which needed a check of the mark of the umpire. “I really love Switzerland,” Fucsovics exclaimed. “Last year, I played my first ATP quarter-final in Basel and now I won my first title here, so it’s really special for me. We’ve been working a long time for this. The last two years were very hard for me in my life, but hopefully I will have a very long career after this.” For Gojowczyk [49] it was the end of the best period in his tennis life (between September ’17 and May ’18 he played three ATP finals, first won it in Metz, then lost in Delray Beach & Geneva).
Fucsovics’s route to his maiden title (23rd main-level event):
1 Albert Ramos 6-1, 6-2
2 Francis Tiafoe 7-6(5), 6-4
Q Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-0
S Steve Johnson 2-6, 6-4, 6-1
W Peter Gojowczyk 6-2, 6-2
