   Interesting 2-hour 17-minute clay-court match on a former US Open arena (1975-77): Becker [2] only 19 y.o. then, but already targeting the pinnacle of men’s tennis, and trying to adjust his game-style to slower surface, against the future French Open champion… Gomez [12] led 4:2* in the opener to lose four straight games. The Ecuadorian led 4:2 again in the 2nd set, Becker again broke back, but Gomez leveled at one set apiece. There was a 3-minute break at 1:1 (30/15) in the decider on Becker’s serve, because Gomez couldn’t accept Paulo Pereira’s overruling of linesman’s decision that changed the scoreline in Becker’s favour. The German led 3:2* (40/15), but Gomez won the last four games. “I was the better player all the way,” Becker said. “I had so many break points, so many easy shots and did it all wrong. And Gomez began hitting the lines and the tape and the ball would go in. He could have closed his eyes and put the ball on the court.” In the final, the 27-year-old Gomez defeated Yannick Noah [6] in straight sets, trailing 0:3 in 2nd & 3:5 in 3rd set, and said: “Yannick doesn’t usually hurt me from the baseline. For him to beat me on clay, he has to make a high percentage of serves. And the return of serve is one of my best shots. So that is why I feel better playing him.”
