Points won by each set: | 32-36, 27-25, 35-31, 30-14 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
20 % Steeb – 22 of 109
21 % Agassi – 26 of 121
Steeb [17] never reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal which is a big deficit in his career given more than 200 matches won and advancement to the Top 20, but it doesn’t mean he was unable to play well in the ‘best of five’ format. He significantly helped Germany in conquering the Davis Cup of the years 1988-89. # In the ’88 edition he stunned Wilander in the final – then the best player of the world, one year later he gave a deciding point in the semifinal against the United States stunning Agassi [6] – then the most promising young player. It wasn’t so obvious that if Steeb had lost it, Becker would have given the Germans victory because in the potential 5th rubber awaited Gilbert, who had defeated Becker 3 times in their 4 previous meetings… Agassi led *2:0 (40/0) in the 3rd set when he lost a control over the match due two reasons:
1) tactical – he wanted to finish the game as quick as possible unnecessarily attacking the net on each point
2) mental – once he lost that set his self-esteem dropped, at the time he had not won a five-setter yet
Silly tactics and inability to turn the things around were two main reasons Agassi needed to wait for his first major title until 1992 even though he had been expected to get the first one already in 1989.
# Steeb’s record in 1988-89 Davis Cup editions (played only singles): 3-1 and 4-4
