Points won by each set: | 30-22, 37-28 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
37 % Gulbis – 18 of 48
37 % Karlovic – 26 of 69
A regular ATP player, no matter how high he’s ranked, is more or less supposed to break Karlovic’s serve only once within two sets (on all surfaces except clay where can count on more), so Gulbis’ achievement was staggering that he broke the giant Croat four times on a hardcourt, even though Dr. Ivo had been broken just once in his four preceding matches at Delray Beach! Karlovic [33] didn’t serve badly in the final, simply Gulbis’ returns were outstanding. In the last game Karlovic fought off three match points with aces, then committed two double faults in a row, and the 22-year-old Gulbis [72] became the first titlelist from Latvia. He was coached at the time by a former Argentine player Hernan Gumy, sixteen years his senior. “Everything that I do now is the first time for my country,” Gulbis said. “I hope it’s positive. They see that a guy from Latvia also can make it and win.”
Gulbis’ route to his maiden title (67th main-level event):
1 Ryan Harrison 6-4, 7-6(5)
2 Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-1, 6-4
Q Leonardo Mayer 7-6(2), 6-4
S Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-4
W Ivo Karlovic 6-2, 6-3
