   In his farewell season Edberg helped Sweden in advancing to the Davis Cup final, and had a reasonable opportunity to finish his successful career in a great style. He’d built a 4:1 Head-To-Head record against Pioline and 10:1 against Boetsch. Unfortunately for the almost 31-year-old Swede [14], he twisted his right ankle at 2:3 (0/30) in the opening set. After a three-minute injury time-out he held his serve, but to the end of the opening rubber it was clear the ankle bothered him. Nevertheless he had his chance to win the 2nd set as he wasted a break point leading 4:3. Pioline [21] converted his first match point with a forehand lob over Edberg’s left side – it was the last point in Edberg’s career. He didn’t risk playing 5th rubber” a player who replaced him – Nicklas Kulti – squandered a triple match point in the decisive encounter, and France got the Davis Cup for the second time in five years. “I was in pain for the rest of the match after the fall,” Edberg said. “I was unable to move at all like I should be able to. It was a question of hanging in there and hoping for miracles. Since it is the Davis Cup, and there is a lot at stake, I did what I could. But obviously I was unable to play up to my normal standards.”
