    Points won by each set: | 38-35, 28-18 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    43 % Sinner – 26 of 60
    27 % Griekspoor – 16 of 59

Italy won the Davis Cup second year running, in 2023 it was a moderate surprise, this year they were the main favorites having in the team the best player in the world (Sinner), and two stronger singles players than in the last year’s finals (last year Arnaldi and Sonego, this year Musetti and Berrettini). Sinner is the first man since Michael Stich in 1993 to win both Masters and Davis Cup in the same year, actually he enjoyed this year one of the most successful seasons in the Open Era, finished it with a 73-6 record (always a decider required in those six defeats) which is comparable to the greatest players in history, and their stellar seasons:

    1974 – Connors 94-7 (three Slam titles)
    1979 – Borg 79-6 (two Slam titles & Masters)
    1984 – McEnroe 82-3 (two Slam titles & Masters)
    1986 – Lendl 79-6 (two Slam titles & Masters)
2005 – Federer 81-4 (three Slam titles & two points away from the Masters title)
    2013 – Nadal 81-7 (two Slam titles)
    2015 – Djokovic 82-6 (three Slam titles & Masters)

Sinner won two Slams this year, but in the other two he went deep, only to be defeated in five-setters by the toughest opposition. Sinner did what Italians expected from him to do – the clincher against Griekspoor [40] he had under control all the time, nonetheless the second Cup for Italy it’s mainly a consequence of Berrettini’s strong performance. He won all five rubbers he played, and backed up Sinner as they teamed up to face Argentinian doubles in the quarterfinals… The Netherlands participated in the DC final for the first time, and it’s quite ironic because the two current best Dutch players are weaker than five who were representing the Netherlands in the 90s (Haarhuis, Siemerink, Eltingh, Krajicek & Schalken) being unable to get the semifinals (# they finally did it in 2001 when Eltingh and Krajicek were out of the question), however, the structure of the Davis Cup changed drastically in 2019, therefore it’s tough comparing to that what was before.

Final (Malaga): ITALY d. NETHERLANDS 2-0
Matteo Berrettini d. Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2
    Jannik Sinner d. Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(2), 6-2
Simone Bolelli / Andrea Vavassori vs. Van de ZandSchulp / Wesley Koolhof, cancelled

    Italy’s route to the title:
round robin: Brazil 2-1, Belgium 2-1, Netherlands 2-1… (Bologna in September)
Q: Argentina 2-1, Australia 2-0, Netherlands 2-0… (Malaga in November)

    Point contribution in six ties:
    Singles: Berrettini 5, Sinner 3, Arnaldi 1, Cobolli 1, Musetti 0
Doubles: Bolelli, Vavassori, Berrettini & Sinner – each of them 0.5

From left: Filippo Volandri (captain), Lorenzo Musetti, Jannik Sinner, Andrea Vavassori, Simone Bolelli, Matteo Berrettini

    # The Davis Cup ’24 finals held in Malaga marked the end of Rafael Nadal‘s professional career. Spain lost to the Netherlands 1-2 in the quarterfinals, Nadal suffered a defeat in his opening rubber to Van de Zandschulp. It’s the third time Dutchmen eliminated Spaniards; previously it occurred in 1993 and 2001, Paul Haarhuis was a team member each time; first as a singles player, then as a doubles player, and in 2024 as the team captain

Sinner finished the year with an excellent 25-8 record in tie-breaks (76%)
