30 % Stich – 26 of 84
Chang [5] defeated actually all the best servers of the 90s in tight ‘best of three’ matches, when a tie-break of the 2nd set was required to escape from a ‘0-2’ defeat or prevailing in deciding 3rd set tie-breaks. His semifinal vs Stich [8], it was very entertaining night session match. The German won unbelievable point at *0:1 (15/0) in the 2nd set, something unseen before or after (* perhaps the ball hit by Stich touched his side first), but the solid Chang dealt better with very demanding conditions (hot & humid), being on his way to notch an easy three-set win. But when he led 4:1* in the 3rd set, he suffered a blister on his ring finger of the leading hand and Stich came back to the match. At 5-all in the deciding tie-break he missed his first serve, stayed back behind the second serve and made a casual backhand error. On the first match point, Chang surprised his opponent with an ace down the T, his first since the opener.
Serve & volley: Chang 0, Stich 15/29
