   The last meeting between them, Stich edged 5-4 their H2H rivalry (7-4 in tie-breaks). It’s quite interesting that it was Stich’s second 2-1 win over Sampras saving a match point in the mid-set, the previous case occurred a year before in Düsseldorf (Stich survived 3-6, 7-6, 6-2)… Sampras [2] trailed *5:6 (15/30) in the 1st set, and won the tie-break with a bizarre net-cord – after the ball hit it, changed its direction and caught the line while Stich thought it could have landed outside and stopped playing. In the 2nd set the German [8] saved the match point with an ace ‘down the T’ at 4:5. The American was very sluggish in the decider, like he didn’t want to play another tight set in the hot temperature.
   One week earlier they had met in the Montreal quarterfinal, and Sampras won 7-6, 6-2 trailing 0:4 in the opener.
