  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: 136-125 | 44-39, 30-25, 26-36, 36-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    21 % Vilas – 27 of 124
    29 % Marks – 40 of 137

Marks [177] is the only Grand Slam runner-up who wasn’t a Top 20 player before or after his appearance in a major final. No. 44 was his highest ranking, it was his second and last main-level final, but it’s difficult to say he was a total fluke because he ousted only “Top 20” players in the fortnight: Clerc (retirement, after he took a 1st set TB), Dent, Sadri, Alexander & Ashe. Vilas [3] obtained the crucial breaks at 1-all, 4-all, 2:1 in three sets he won. Marks broke at 4:3 in the 3rd set. The sensational runner-up, prior to the Aussie Open ’78 had lost 6 matches in a row (14 consecutive sets, counting the first two sets in Melbournne).

Vilas’ route to his 42nd title:
    1 Terry Rocavert 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6
    2 Brad Drewett 6-4, 6-4, 6-3
    3 Allan Stone 6-4, 6-4, 6-4
    Q Tony Roche 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2
    S Hank Pfister 6-2, 6-0, 6-4
    W John Marks 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3
