Points won by each set: [ 32-25, 37-26, 31-19 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
46 % Tanner – 39 of 84
24 % Vilas – 21 of 86
January, the biggest success in Tanner’s career. He was very well concentrated throughout the match, and even though people considered him as the fastest server at the time, no-one expected he’d defeat Vilas [6] so easily; the Argentinian – known as a clay-court specialist – had won Masters ’74 on grass and led 2:1 in their Head-to-Head. The same score in every set, but the 3rd one was the easiest for Tanner [11] – no problems on serve whatsoever… Later that year Australian Open is held again, and Tanner loses in the first round as a defending champion (in five sets to Chris Lewis, the future Wimbledon runner-up).
Tanner’s route to his lone Slam title:
1 Brian Teacher 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5
2 Peter Fleming 7-6, 6-2, 6-1
3 Tony Roche 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1
Q Phil Dent 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
S Ken Rosewall 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1
W Guillermo Vilas 6-3, 6-3, 6-3
