It was the best period in Gilbert’s career and one of the most impressive months (August) for a player in the Open Era… The 28-year-old American beat Stefan Edberg in the final (6-4, 2-6, 7-6), extending his winning streak to 17 matches (captured titles in Stratton Mountain, Livingston & Cincinnati); between July & October ’89, Gilbert won 35 out of 39 matches (played eight tournaments and two rubbers in a tie vs West Germany), becoming the first man since Becker in 1986 to win three titles within three weeks (24 matches in 31 days between July 21st and August 20th). Becker, after the loss to Gilbert, rested for a week, then went to New York and claimed his only US Open title.
