  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 33-37, 31-28, 40-35 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    37 % Martin – 36 of 97
    20 % Agassi – 22 of 107

The only match in [5] Agassi’s very long career when he lost 1-2 in sets despite leading by a break in sets 2 and 3, in this case it was 4:2 and 3:1 respectively; he wasn’t closer than six points away to win this match though. Martin [26] was applying a serve-and-volley strategy behind every 1st serve; when he was trailing 4-6, *2:4 having won three games facing break points, and his straight set loss seemed inevitable, he continued his strategy and it paid off in the end. After saving a match point, Agassi had a game point, but played a poor lob, and facing the second match point he risked his second serve – the ball struck by him went too long. The year 1998 meant a comeback season for these both 28-year-old Americans: due to lack of motivation Agassi dropped from No. 8 to 141 (at worst) in 1997 while Martin from 12 to 64 (at worst) due to an injury that kept him out of the game for half a year. A round earlier, Martin survived a similar match, even tighter and longer (2 hours 42 minutes) as he ousted Rafter 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 being two points away to lose sets 2 and 3.

    Serve & volley: Martin 14/26, Agassi 2/2
